Having your Baby at St. Joe’s – Arriving at the Birthing Unit

The day you have been waiting for is finally
here, your baby is about to be born. Here’s what you need to know about checking into
the Birthing Unit here at St. Joe’s and what you’ll want to tell family members and friends
about visiting you during your stay. The Birthing Unit is on level 2 of the Bishop
Dowling Wing, the Mother Baby Unit, the Special Care Nursery Unit and the Breastfeeding And
Newborn Assessment, also known as the B.A.N.A. Clinic, are all on level 3 of the Bishop Dowling
Wing. The St. Joseph’s Drive entrance and the Fontbonne
bridge and parking garage entrance are each open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The St. Joseph’s Drive entrance is closest to the Birthing Unit. 10 minute drop off and
short-term parking are available at this entrance. To reach the Birthing Unit via the St. Joseph’s
Drive entrance, enter the St. Joseph’s Drive entrance from either direction. Make your
way to the doors with an entrance sign above them, wash your hands, go through the set
of doors marked Level 2 Mary Grace, turn right, you will see a Birthing Unit sign on the wall
with an arrow pointing to the right, follow this arrow to the Birthing Unit, pick up the
phone in the waiting area and tell the person who answers that you are a woman in labour.
Push the bar on the door and enter the unit when you are instructed to do so, someone
will come to greet you. While you are waiting, feel free to take a seat in the reception
area or otherwise make yourself as comfortable as possible. If you need care right away,
pick up the phone on the wall across from the chairs and someone will come to attend
to you right away. The Fontbonne bridge and parking garage is
further away from the Birthing Unit but longer term parking is available at this entrance.
To reach the Birthing Unit via the Fontbonne bridge and parking garage entrance, access
the parking garage from either St. Joseph’s Drive or James Street South. Enter the parking
garage, exit the parking garage and turn right. Remember to take your parking ticket with
you. Enter the building, wash your hands, walk straight ahead until the hall ends, turn
right and walk towards the windows, turn left at the end of the hall, walk across the bridge
to the end of the elevators, you are now in the Bishop Dowling Wing.
Take the elevator to Level 2, exit the elevator and turn left, pick up the phone in the waiting
area and enter the Unit when you are instructed to do so. Someone will come to greet you.
While you are waiting make yourself as comfortable as possible. If you need care right away,
pick up the phone on the wall and someone will come to attend to you right away.
