Belief in the Unseen – Amin Ahsan Islahi’s Interpretation – Dr Shehzad Saleem

this will Armani Rahim Aslam aleikum ladies and gentlemen today we'll discuss a very significant interpretation of stars Amina Salahi one of his very important contributions to his Quranic thought will be discussed here and more specifically it relates to his interpretation of the third verse of surah Baqarah in which it is allegedly been told to the believers that they should believe in the unseen so the word the words which are generated which are used in the quran at that place of course are always on our minds Lezyne Vanunu bill arrived so while describing the abilities the capabilities and the attributes of believers the Quran says that they are ones who believe in the unseen as is generally translated and this of course has given rise to this notion that believers are those who believe in the unseen and of course this further gives rise to this this thought that some whatever is unseen has to be believed in even if one is not absolutely convinced of it so stars I mean as in this light he hasn't repaired this worse in a different way and has actually presented parallels from the Quran itself and told us how it has an entirely different meaning which is much more logical and much more preferred if we keep the whole corpus of the Quran in our mind and in our in before us and it also needs to be understood that he has actually presented as I said these parallels from the Quran which support his view and his translation of the word of this verse would be that they are believers who believe while being unseen while remaining unseen it's not that they believe in the unseen but they believe while remaining unseen while remaining in the right and this of course would imply that the word bar here is taken to be the surf or the locus of the word and this would actually mean that believers do not insist on seeing certain realities and and then saying it we will only believe once we see realities in fact they are ones who see who believe in reality is because of the fact that there are arguments in favor of the art reality there is reasoning in favor of that reality they don't in space insist that if they see the smoke coming out of someplace then only unless they see the fire behind it or the fire at that place only then will they believe in the fire so a smoke is something something which sufficiently guides them similarly there are so many other things which which guides with a guided person in which he believes something without seeing it force of gravity for example is something which we know is something which exists in this verse in this universe and we have never seen that force but we still believe it because of its effects on us so stars I mean as soon as I say is that this verse basically tells us that believers are those people are those beings who who believe in certain things without seeing them or while they are unseen to them and for this as I said he has also presented verses of the Quran in support of his view that's for example I present before you the 49th verse of surah MBA which show stars like has cited in his excuses of this worse and it says elizena action arab ba humble rape wha-hoo – are at the moon and people who fear their Lord unseen and who who are who fear who fear thee the horrors of the Day of Judgment so who or will fear the day of judgement so again as you can see the hair the word ba is as the locus of the person that he does not demand that thing to be seen and whatever is believed in is something which he may not be seen but the fact is that he believes in that thing because reasoning and because of arguments in favor of that thing are very strong in other words which he has presented in support of his view is in the Matins illa allatheena in the Mekons the rulinea shelter of ba humble Vaibhav of salah so while addressing the prophet said o prophet you can only council and you can only advise those be who while remaining unseen believe in their God I without without seeing their God they believe in him they are they are they are in a place where they could not see God and God is in a place where they cannot see him and in spite of this they remain believers in God because there are arguments in favor of God so you can see dear viewers that this interpretation has a very significant import it tells us that the real thing is cognizance of unknown things but of things which are we in which we are made to profess our belief without actually demanding them to see these things and if this is the case then of course we know that faith becomes something which can be communicated to other people because when we are believing something because of certain reason in favor of that then what we are doing is that we can we are also able to communicate that reason to other people so it's like establishing a line of communication through reasoning otherwise the the normal or general interpretation of this verse is in which the the letter ba is taken to be the object and therefore it's it's it's it actually means that they believe in the unseen the translation which is generally done as a result is that we believe in the unseen and or they believe in the Allah rhyme so far the slaw he has also criticized this translation although he says that it is admissible it is grammatically possible but there are some questions which arise on it for example firstly he says that the word God would come out would be subtracted from this interpretation because Iman will arrive would require the hell Rebbe is one of the names of the almighty and this is not so and then he says similarly the important thing here is that faith or belief in the Quran and belief in the Prophet himself would also be subtracted or taken out because of the fact that of course people in the time of the Prophet would see the Prophet and the book is still available to all the believers so this is not unseen at best what remains unseen would be the hereafter and that gain he says that is something which is already mentioned ahead in these verses and these set of verses when it is said verbal after drafting whom you'll be known that they are ones who have conviction in the head office although their offer is already mentioned here and he surmises his critique by saying that this gives a very very limited conception of faith itself of belief itself while the other interpretation gives a very wide conception of belief and not only that it also tells us that belief is something which is based on reasoning which is based on logic it is not something which is based on mere dogma and hence as a believer it becomes a very very huge revelation for all of us it tells us that we have to believe while remaining unseen all our while remaining in in an obstruction with from those facts from which we on which we are to believe and the reason that we are required to believe in them is that there are some arguments which favor their existence which favor that they are there and therefore we we actually focus on those arguments we focus on that reasoning and then we believe it and so the biggest result of this interpretation is that faith or belief ends in certain facts becomes a communicative bill thing it does not become a dogma it is a thing in which you and your addressee can speak about in terms of reasoning and of course they could be a discussion and debate and this is how the almighty actually has in the rest of the Quran has asked us that we must believe while thinking while reflecting and that is how we will have that living relationship with the Almighty which is so missing from our lives until we have that living relationship with the Almighty and until we have that feeling that we are we are believing something after being convinced of that thing we will never have that conviction in the things that we believe so I would say this is a very important contribution of the stars Amenia Smith and let us reflect once again on how he has actually changed our whole approach towards understanding this worse Akula call he has a was dr. lu la la li walakum bala Cyril Muslim inna well Muslim ugh
